In the BC Earthquake Alliance’s second Quake Tales story, we invited Kanako Nemoto to share her story of the earthquake and the month that followed. Ms. Nemoto has lived in the Esquimalt area since 2018 and was a graduate student at the time of the Great Tōhoku Earthquake in 2011.

#3 - Quake Tales Presents Sarah Barr
In the BC Earthquake Alliance’s third Quake Tales story, we invited Sarah Barr to share her experiences during the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. Ms. Barr, a North Vancouver resident and mother of two young children, lived in Christchurch, New Zealand, when the earthquakes struck five months apart.
The first earthquake occurred on September 4, 2010, beginning with a magnitude 5.7 foreshock at 4:35 a.m., followed shortly by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake centred near Darfield, west of Christchurch. A second major earthquake struck on February 22, 2011, measuring magnitude 6.3 and causing widespread devastation and the loss of 185 lives. #4 - Quake Tales Presents Sarah Barr
In the BC Earthquake Alliance’s third Quake Tales story, Part Two continues Sarah Barr’s account of the February 22, 2011 Christchurch earthquake and the challenges that followed. The magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck at lunchtime, causing widespread destruction across Christchurch and Lyttelton, collapsing already weakened buildings and resulting in the loss of 185 lives.
